Horse Racing Betting
Bet with freedom with the best Horse Racing betting site
It’s the spiritual home of the bookmaker. While online betting has now become the focus, it was on the terraces of the world’s biggest racecourses where bookies first became an integral part of sporting tradition.
The boards are now digital, the markets now vast, but at Betway we’re still committed to being that friendly face, giving you the chance to take a punt on your horse, armed with as much information as possible.
There’s an exciting world out there. A world of bets, each way and outrights, multiples and singles, Yankees and Trixies and so many more, just a couple of clicks or taps away at a moment’s notice.
And in this historic and traditional sport, there’s a lot to get your head round. But Betway is here for you. We’ll show you the difference between an outsider and a favourite, help you get to grips with the biggest races on the calendar and make sure you clear any hurdle on your way to getting the most from your Horse Racing betting.
Horse racing odds
A great place to start is understanding how odds work in horse racing. In simple terms, the odds of your bet relates directly to how much you’ll win if your bet is successful.
There are two most common ways of displaying horse racing odds, fractional and decimal. With fractional horse racing odds e.g. 7/1, you’ll win your stake multiplied by the numerator, plus your original stake. Let’s say your £10 horse racing bet at 7/1 is successful, you’ll get 7 x £10 = £70 in winnings plus your £10 back, giving you a return of £80.
Decimal odds, popular in continental Europe and North America, already include your stake. 7/1 becomes 8.00, showing you that a £10 bet would return £80.
Sometimes horse racing odds won’t be as clear as 7/1 or 10/1 but don’t worry, you’ll be able to see just how much a successful bet would return when deciding how much to stake. So those horse racing odds of 17/4 or 13/2 will be easy to understand.
Grand National Betting
The Grand National - Perhaps one of the most famous races in the world. And if you’re here that means you want to know more about Grand National betting.
This year the races will begin on Thursday 2nd April and run until Saturday 4th, when the main day of racing takes place.
History of the Race
Before we begin our Grand National betting guide, we’ll give you a brief history of the great event.
It first began in 1839 and is still going strong today.
It’s held at the iconic at Aintree Racecourse, near Liverpool, on a 4 mile and 2½ furlong course, consisting of 30 fences over two laps.
The Grand National is the longest of any National Hunt race in Britain.
The race is considered to be the “ultimate test of horse and jockey”, including some famous fences on the course: Becher's Brook, Valentine's Brook, and the Canal Turn.
An estimated 600 million people watch the great race in more than 140 countries. So you’ll be in good company for your Grand National betting.
Previous Grand National Winners
The past two years have been ruled by one name; Tiger Roll.
Ridden by jockey Davy Russell for trainer Gordon Elliott, Tiger Roll won back-to-back in 2018 and 2019.
Tiger Roll was one of the Grand National favourites in both years, beating stiff competition each time.
It’s only the second horse to win back-to-back since the famous Grand National favourite Red Rum.
Red Rum is the only horse to have won the race three times, in 1973, 1974, and 1977. It also finished second in 1975 and 1976.
More recently, One For Arthur won in 2017 at starting Grand National odds of 14/1.
However, the eventual winners don’t always start out as Grand National favourites. Previous results show they can come from anywhere in the pack:
Rule The World won in 2016 at starting odds of 33/1.
Aroras Encore won in 2013 at starting odds of 66/1.
2020 Grand National Favourites
Here’s your Grand National betting guide with all the top horses to watch out for:
Tiger Roll is back again and one of the top Grand National favourites for 2020. It has been in impressive form in the lead up.
Any Second Now, and Burrows Saint are equal second favourites at starting odds of 16/1.
One For Arthur is listed for a return, following its win in 2017, but at starting odds of 25/1, it’s not expected to beat the other Grand National favourites.
The race usually attracts upwards of 100 entries to make the final cut of 40 runners. So check back in closer to race day to get the final list of Grand National favourites.

Cheltenham Festival. The undisputed highlight of the National Hunt season. Where the finest horses, jockeys, owners and trainers compete for the highest honours in racing and their slice of one of the largest prize pools in the sport.
Over the space of four days, Cheltenham will play host to 28 Grade One races, including:
Day One: The Champion Hurdle
First run in 1927, the Champion Hurdle is, as the name suggests, the most prestigious hurdling event on the calendar. The list of past winners reads like a Who’s Who of the best hurdlers in the history of racing, including the likes of National Spirit, Istabraq, Persian War, and 2019 winner Espoir D’Allen.
Day Two: The Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase
Proudly sponsored by Betway since 2015, the Queen Mother Champion Chase is run over two miles and 13 fences on Cheltenham’s Old Course. Altior’s victory in 2019 – his second in a row – gave trainer Nicky Henderson a record-equalling sixth win.
Day Three: The Festival Trophy
Day Three of the festival is known as ‘St Patrick’s Day’ to celebrate the considerable Irish influence the festival has always enjoyed. The history of the Festival Trophy, first run in 2005, reflects that same influence, with Irishman Ruby Walsh winning a record four times, most recently on board Un De Sceaux in 2017.
Day Four: The Cheltenham Gold Cup
The big one. The most prestigious of all the National Hunt Races. Countless legendary chasers – including Arkle, Best Mate, Kauto Star and Denman have scooped Cheltenham’s most coveted prize.
With three winning rides, Nico de Boinville was top jockey at the 2019 festival. Davy Russell went one better in 2018, with four winners, the same number that gave Ruby Walsh top spot in 2017.
How do you pick your horse? Silks? Form? Jockey? Name? Whatever your process, make sure you come to Betway for the best Cheltenham odds.
With odds available in both fractional and decimal form, we boast markets on every single race from all four days of the Cheltenham Festival.

What horse racing markets do Betway offer?
There are many different bet types but the most popular markets in horse racing tend to be outrights. That’s another word for when you pick what horse will win any given race.
That’s also one of our favourite markets and it’s one we offer regular money back specials on, like our ITV racing second place Free Bet refund. If you back a horse in a race broadcast live on ITV with six or more runners, and it finishes second, don’t worry, we’ll give you your money back as a Free Bet.
If you’re looking for a way to hedge your bets, why not try an each-way market. These will pay out if the horse you pick finishes within a set number of places. That can be anything from finishing in the top three to a top six finish. We’ll often pay out on extra places in some of the most popular races, giving you the chance to turn one of the sport’s biggest days into another memorable moment.
The world’s favourite sport is also our most popular. As a U.K. based bookmaker, we’re specialists in football betting, Premier League betting and as well as experts on leagues and competitions across the globe. With 4 To Score we give you the opportunity to win a cash prize just by predicting the first goal scorers in 3pm kick offs in four leagues up and down England – and it’s totally free to enter.
