How does the Big Bash work?
Before you consider any Big Bash betting, make sure you know how the tournament works.
The Big Bash – or BBL – is a T20 cricket tournament held in Australia during December, January and February.
The league is made up of eight teams:
- Sydney Thunder
- Sydney Sixers
- Perth Scorchers
- Melbourne Stars
- Melbourne Renegades
- Hobart Hurricanes
- Brisbane Heat
- Adelaide Strikers
The regular season runs until the end of January, after which the play offs begin.
The Big Bash final is then typically on the first weekend of February.
Though it’s an Australian domestic league, the BBL features a wide array of talented players from overseas. These have included the likes of Lasith Malinga, Jofra Archer, AB de Villiers, and many more of the world’s top cricketers.
How the Big Bash playoffs work:
The top five teams at the end of the tournament qualify for the playoffs.
The top two teams play off in ‘the Qualifier’. The winner of ‘the Qualifier’ goes directly to the final.
The fourth and fifth placed teams play each other in ‘the Eliminator’.
The team that wins ‘the Eliminator’ will play the third placed team in ‘the Knockout’.
The winner of ‘the Knockout’ plays the loser of ‘the Qualifier’ to see who will take the remaining spot in the final.

Big Bash Predictions
Who are the favourites for Big Bash 2020/2021?
With the new playoff format, the top teams have an extra chance to make it to the final, but the lower teams still have a shot – something to factor into your Big Bash betting.
Eight out of the past nine winners have not been the top qualifying team.
In 2019/20, the Sydney Sixers won the BBL, after qualifying in second.
in 2018/19, the Melbourne Renegades won the BBL, having also qualified second in that season.
Both teams will be hotly rated in any Big Bash predictions for the current season.
The Perth Scorchers have won three titles but failed to qualify for the finals in more recent seasons.
The early Big Bash odds have tipped the two Sydney teams (Sixers and Thunder), followed by the Hobart Hurricanes, and Melbourne Stars.
Players to watch:
The BBL has some of top T20 batsmen in the world.
England international Dawid Malan plays for the Hobart Hurricanes and is the ICC number one T20 batsman.
Also in the ICC top 10 are Australians Aaron Finch (Melbourne Renegades) and Glen Maxwell (Melbourne Stars), and New Zealander Colin Munro (Perth Scorchers).
The Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers dominated the regular season in 2019/20 thanks to big performances from key players. Watch for them to have another stellar season when considering your Big Bash betting.
Melbourne Stars won 10/14 games in the 2019/2020 BBL season thanks to big batting performances from Marcus Stoinis (705 runs) and wickets from Adam Zampa (20 wickets). They’ll both be key players again.
