The Six Nations traces its history back to the Home Nations Championship, first contested between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in 1883. With the addition of France in 1910, the tournament became the Five Nations, and remained that way until Italy’s inclusion in 2000 gave the competition and format we know and love.

Though the line-up of participating nations came to be through historical selection rather than merit, the six teams that compete in the tournament – England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales – happen to be the six-highest-ranked on the continent today.

Six Nations 2020 Fixtures

Six Nations 2020 will take place across five rounds running from 1st February, until 14th March, with each team playing five times. The tournament is decided in a league table format, with four points awarded for a win, two for a draw, and a bonus point awarded to teams for a match in which they score four or more tries, or in which they lose by seven points of fewer. Finally, to ensure that a team that completes a Grand Slam (victory in all five of their matches) cannot be superseded by one of the teams they beat, three bonus points are awarded for the feat.
