For the 60th anniversary of the European Championships, EURO 2020 breaks the mould of tournaments gone by, holding the competition across 12 different European countries rather than one. These countries are Azerbaijan, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Romania, Russia, Scotland and Spain.
Whilst some countries will host group games only, others have been given starring roles in hosting the biggest matches of the competition. England’s Wembley Stadium will take centre stage, hosting seven matches including both semi-finals and the Euro 2020 Final on July 12th. And Betway will be there every step of the way.
24 teams have qualified for the competition via the Euro 2020 qualifiers and playoffs, creating six groups of four. The top two from each group will advance to the knockout stage, with the four best third-placed teams also advancing.
The tournament then turns to a knockout format, starting with the round of 16 and culminating with the Euro 2020 Final in London.
The only black mark on Cristiano Ronaldo’s otherwise stellar career was a failure to land an international trophy. That was until his Portugal side defied the odds and won Euro 2016. CR7 and Co. are back again this year vying to defend their title. But they won’t have it all their own way, especially with the strength in the competition this year.
Looking past Group F for a potential winner in EURO 2020 could be a mistake. The Portuguese are joined by fellow Euro 2016 finalists and reigning world champions France, and a German side who have completed a squad overhaul since their disappointing 2018 World Cup showing.
But could home field advantage play a significant role? For England, many of their matches will take place on their shores, and the backing of a home crowd has shown time and time again what a significant role it can play; it was in England that the Three Lions won their only major international competition to date, the 1966 World Cup.
Looking beyond the favourites, some dark horses could spring a few upsets as the tournament goes on, including Finland, who find themselves at their first European Championships ever.
The likes of Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia also have strong reasons to feel like this could be their year. But no matter who you think will come out on top at the European Championships this year, Betway offer odds on all matches, with a variety of markets ready for you to choose from.
Here at Betway, we pride ourselves on going the extra mile to make your betting experience as memorable as possible. So whether it is Outright Winner, Match Winner, or something more niche like Cards or Corners, rest assured there’s a market tailored just for you.
